" Women planning to get Pregnant
Should consider getting Life or Health Insurance Cover "
Women planning to have a baby should consider buying life or health insurance before they get pregnant. Often a woman can get insurance through the end of her first trimester but after that, there may be a waiting period following her baby's birth - for some Insurers.
Why ? Well women who have straightforward pregnancies should have few problems getting life insurance, but those who may incur various complications and then seek life cover are likely to find some Uk life insurance companies refuse to sell them a policy until after their child is born.
What can problems arise from being Pregnant & make it hard getting Life Insurance ?
Death through pregnancy is rare today in the UK but there can be other complications. Conditions such as gestational diabetes, raised blood pressure causing possible heart disease, obesity & weight problems, toxaemia and hypertension are likely to result in an insurance application being delayed.
Many Insurers in 2020 state they are now seeing a new generational wave of high-risk mothers - who are more likely to face complications or women who have IVF and are likely to have multiple births, increasing the risk of severe pre-eclampsia. 2'nd pregnancies where the first has been complex would almost certainly cause insurers to delay cover until after birth.
Serious pre-existing medical conditions can advance rapidly, or be untreatable during pregnancy and sometimes these can go undetected until the baby is on the way. Breast cancer can thrive in maternity months and the delay of an operation could mean increase health risks. Cervical or other types of cancer cannot be treated while a child is being carried.
So although many insurers will now sell insurance to healthy pregnant women, they may however not allow them to take out a 'waiver of premium' option - insurance to cover the cost of premiums if the holder is off work through illness for any length of time - until after the baby is born. This may be because insurers fear exposing themselves to the liability of pregnant policy holders taking more time off work through morning sickness.

What do Uk Life Insurance Companies look for - when Underwriting someone who is Pregnant ?
It would depend on the type of problems faced as explained & severity as mentioned above. For Life or Critical lllness Cover most Uk insurers would view each case on an individual basis before making a decision.
