|
Crohn's & Life Insurance
If you have a history of Crohns, a broker may still be able to help you obtain life or critical illness insurance - although maybe not onto standard terms. There are some critical factors involved that will determine your ability to obtain coverage & your information is always treated with the utmost privacy by the insurer or broker.
Life Insurance - What is Crohn's ?
Crohn's disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (gut). The gut consists of the oesophagus (gullet), stomach, and small and large intestine. Chron's disease can affect any part of the gut. However, it most commonly occurs at the lower end of the small intestine, known as the ileum. Typical symptoms include, pain, ulcers and diarrhoea. Daily medication can be taken to relieve the symptoms but sometimes, surgery to remove part of the gut, may be required.
Crohn's and colitis are 2 similar, but separate, conditions of the bowel that are commonly referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD]. Both conditions cause painful inflammation and ulceration of the digestive tract.
Crohn's inflammation can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus, and colitis is usually confined to the large bowel (colon) and rectum. The symptoms can be very isolating and debilitating for an IBD sufferer, and include painful abdominal cramping, weight loss, malnutrition, chronic diarrhoea, nausea and fatigue. Treatment can include long-term, strong medications and in some cases surgery. Sufferers can find that IBD and its associated symptoms has a great impact on their confidence or emotional outlook.
The outlook for people with Crohn's disease varies depending on which part of the gut is affected, and the severity and frequency of the symptoms.

Crohn's & Life Insurance Underwriting
In order to check the severity of Crohn's, Insurers are likely to request a GP or Medical Report if you are requesting additional options over and above just pure lifecover. Note non-disclosure of your actual Crohn's problem, may make any plan claim void & the insurer is not obliged on to payout or to refund any premiums paid if this was deliberately not disclosed.
What do Life Insurance Companies look for
- when Underwriting a History of Crohn's Disease ?
It would depend on the severity of Crohn's. For Life and Critical lllness Cover most insurers would view each case on an individual basis before making a decision. However the likely decision for cover maybe a substantial premium rating. Note that decisions may vary quite dramatically between insurers so please contact us for help & advice.
