ALCOHOL PROBLEMS & LIFE INSURANCE ~ UNDERWRITING ISSUES
|
Alcohol & Life Insurance
If you have a history of treatment for alcohol excess, a broker may still be able to help you obtain life insurance although possibly not a standard terms. There are some critical factors involved that will determine your ability to obtain coverage & your information is always treated with the utmost privacy by the insurer or broker.
Alcoholism & Underwriting
Alcoholism is a chronic disease that does present difficulties in life cover underwriting. The ability to obtain life assurance coverage is based on your medical history, treatment, current medical records and results. An Insurer would need to know the date of diagnosis of alcoholism, length of abstinence, liver function lft tests, whether there were any complications or side effects etc; In order to check this they are likely to request a GP or Medical Report. Note that decisions may vary quite dramatically between insurers so please contact us for help & advice.
Note non-disclosure of your actual true alcohol intake, may make any plan claim void & the insurer is not obliged on death for the life insurance payout or refund any premiums paid if this was deliberately not disclosed.

What do Life Insurers look for - when Underwriting an Alcoholic History ?
If your alcohol consumption is over 40 units a week ( a unit is equivalent to 1/2 pint of beer, a measure of spirits or 1 glass of wine ) an Insurer would request a GP Report. In this instance they would view each case on an individual basis before making any decision & usually look at some of the following issues.
-
History - What happened in the past? Are there extenuating circumstances that contributed to your alcohol problem?
-
Medical Records - What do your medical records say about you? Have you developed medical problems as a result of alcohol? If you have already developed Cirrhosis of the liver as a result of alcohol use, most companies may probably decline you.
-
Treatment - Have you been to any treatment facility? Are you or were you a member of Alcoholics Anonymous [AA] ?
-
The Occasional Drink - When a company sees an alcohol related event such as AA or rehab, and sees that the person has an occasional drink now, it is usually very difficult to obtain coverage...Even if years have passed since treatment.
-
Employment - Has alcohol affected you employment? Are you currently employed? What type of responsibilities do you have at work? What life insurance companies are looking for is responsible behavior here. Note: Life insurance companies don't usually contact your employer.
