UNITED FRIENDLY INSURANCE
United Friendly Life Assurance was founded in 1908. United Friendly Insurance was once a major force in the protection market place with brokers then slowly disappeared as a brand as the mortgage market slowly moved from endowments to repayment mortgages.
In 1989 the American Express financial planning organisation bought a small UK insurance company, Devonshire Life which then set up Acuma. In 1993 Acuma was sold to the United Friendly group. Acuma Life Insurance changed its name to United Friendly Life Assurance in 1994.
United Friendly and Refuge Assurance merge in 1996 to form United Assurance Group, trading as United Friendly. Friends Provident was then given the right to market their client database. Royal London Insurance Company took over both in 2000 and Scottish Life in 2001. The Financial Services Authority reportedly fined both United Friendly & Refuge Assurance for their sales of with-profits endowment savings policies.
The Royal London Group now adminsters old UnitedFriendly policies from their head office based in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Bright Grey was set up by Royal London Life in 2003 to make protection insurance more flexible and accessible. At the end of 2008 Royal London acquired a range of businesses from Pearl Group Limited that includes Scottish Provident.
Royal London Life Insurance products via Bright Grey with their Menu Protection product in 2008 offer the opportunity to combine several types of cover with one Insurer. Life cover, decreasing (mortgage protection) or level term assurance, Life with Critical Illness, Children's Critical Illness, Income Protection and Un-Employment cover.
