SCOTTISH LIFE INSURANCE
Scottish Life Assurance Company, an Edinburgh based mutual society founded in 1881 became a mutual in 1968. Scottish Life was once one of Britains largest mutual insurers. Scottish Life sold protection, endowments as well as pension investment products.
Scottish Life once a major force in the mortgage protection market place with brokers then slowly disappeared as a brand as the mortgage market slowly moved from endowments to repayment mortgages. In 2001 the Royal London Group won a bidding war against Liverpool Victoria to purchase Scottish Life Assurance when they also demutualised.
The Royal London Group founded in 1835 is also one of Britain's largest mutual life insurers. They now own Scottish Life, Bright Grey and Royal London Asset Management. Royal London Insurance Company took over Refuge Assurance and United Friendly in 2000, as well as Scottish Life in 2001. Scottish Life was then used for their pension fund product expertise & Bright Grey was set up by Royal London Life in 2003 to sell protection insurance. There was also talk of a possible merger with fellow mutual insurer Royal Liver in 2007. At the end of 2008 Royal London acquired a range of businesses from Pearl Group Limited that includes Scottish Provident.
Royal London Life Insurance products via Bright Grey are highly competitive in their marketplace with their Menu Protection product offering the opportunity to combine several types of cover with one Provider. Life cover, decreasing (mortgage protection) or level term assurance, Life with Critical Illness, Children's Critical Illness, Income Protection and Un-Employment cover.
