NATWEST LIFE INSURANCE
The National Westminster Bank, part of Royal Bank of Scotland Group was established in the 1800's. In 1999 NatWest announced a proposed merger with Legal & General, the first between a bank and an insurance company in UK history. In response The Royal Bank of Scotland mounted a hostile takeover in 2000.
The RBS Group main subsidiary companies are: The Royal Bank of Scotland; National Westminster Bank; Ulster Bank; Drummonds and Coutts & Co. Insurance companies include Churchill Insurance, Direct Line, Privilege, and NIG.
In 2000 the bank reportedly transferred National Westminster Life Assurance Limited to RBS Life Investments Limited, effectively establishing the business as a joint venture with Norwich Union.
Nat West Life Insurance [from their Bristol offices] was set up to help provide life insurance for their personal & business customers via their branch network. Today Nat West life assurance - RBS Life Insurance policy plans are via Royal Scottish Assurance which in early 2000 was a joint venture with Scottish Equitable. Products include over 50's lifecover, Life insurance cover, decreasing (mortgage protection) or level term assurance, Life with Critical Illness, Income Protection and Un-Employment cover.
