GENERAL ACCIDENT LIFE ASSURANCE
General Accident Insurance Company was founded in 1885 in Scotland. In 1996 General Accident acquired Provident Mutual (established 1840) - a significant milestone in the development of its life and pensions business. In 1998 General Accident [GA Life] and Commercial Union merged to form CGU plc. General Accident used to have alliances to sell their insurance products to the customers via Estate Agents like Your Move, various Banks & Building Societies as well as via brokers. General Accident Life Company was also once a major force in the protection market place with its direct sales force.
In 2000, Norwich Union merged with CGU, which itself was formed from the merger of General Accident and Commercial Union in 1998. Upon merging they formed CGNU Life Insurance Group which went on to become the Aviva group. As announced from 4/2008, the Aviva Life Insurance brand will be dominant. In 1997, Norwich Union had demutualised and floated as a PLC on the Stock Exchange.
Today you cannot purchase General Accident life assurance products anymore but old plans may still serve customers and are adminstered via Norwich Union Life Assurance. In 2008 Norwich Union Life Assurance offers a wide range of products - Life cover, decreasing (mortgage protection) or level term assurance, Life with Critical Illness, Children's Critical Illness, Income Protection and Un-Employment cover.
