GENERAL ACCIDENT LIFE ASSURANCE General Accident Insurance Company was founded in 1885 in Scotland. In 1996 General Accident acquired Provident Mutual (established 1840) - a significant milestone in the development of its life and pensions business. In 1998 General Accident [GA Life] and Commercial Union merged to form CGU plc. Upon merging they formed CGNU Life Insurance Group which went on to become the Aviva group. In 2007 Aviva completed the acquisition of Hamilton Insurance from HFC Bank plc , a subsidiary of HSBC Finance Corporation. As announced from 4/2008, the Aviva Life Insurance brand will be dominant. In 1997, Norwich Union had demutualised and floated as a PLC on the Stock Exchange.   Today you cannot purchase General Accident life assurance products anymore but old plans may still serve customers and are adminstered via Norwich Union Life Assurance.
