CGNU LIFE ASSURANCE General Accident Insurance Company was founded in 1885 in Scotland. Commercial Union Life Assurance was founded in 1600's. In 1998 General Accident [GA Life] and Commercial Union merged to form CGU plc. Both General Accident & Commercial Union Life Company [CU Life] were also once a major force in the protection market place with their sales forces. CU famous TV advert said "we do not make a drama out of a crisis"  In 2000, Norwich Union merged with CGU plc. Upon merging they formed the group CGNU Life Assurance Ltd which remained as the trading name until 2002 - then went on to become the Aviva group. As announced from 4/2008, the Aviva Life Insurance brand will be dominant. In 1997, Norwich Union had demutualised and floated as a PLC on the Stock Exchange.   Today you cannot purchase CGNU life assurance products anymore but old plans may still serve customers and are adminstered via Norwich Union Life Assurance.
