BANK OF SCOTLAND LIFE INSURANCE The Bank of Scotland plc is based in Edinburgh, Scotland with a history dating to the 17th century. Since 2001 the Bank of Scotland has formed part of HBOS plc, following a merger with the Halifax Group (formerly the Halifax Building Society). The new group was named Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) with headquarters in Edinburgh, but retaining both Halifax and the Bank of Scotland as brand names. The Bank also owns Intelligent Finance plus they have a 50% stake in Sainsbury's Finance Bank - the other 50% being owned by J Sainsbury plc.
